Please read the following regarding factors affecting
accuracy of body fat readings:
Bioimpedance Bodyfat Analyzers employ a widely used method for
determining percent bodyfat. In this method, a low frequency electrical
current is passed through the body. The current used for the measurement
is low, making it safe and imperceptible. The amount of fat in the body is
determined by analyzing the way in which this current passes through the body.
However, other factors can also affect this current flow and, so for accurate
readings, the following steps should be adhered to:
THE MOST ACCURATE BODYFAT READINGS CAN BE OBTAINED BY:
-
Urinate prior to taking measurements.
-
Take measurements about 3 hours after eating and/or
exercising.
-
Body should be dry and clean. If you have sweated
significantly since last shower or bath, then for the most accurate
readings, you should shower or bath again shortly before taking readings.
Be sure to dry thoroughly.
-
The best time of day to take measurements is the evening.
While other times of the day may not be quite as accurate in absolute terms,
they are accurate for the purpose of determining change in percentage
bodyfat so long as the readings are taken at the same time in a consistent
manner.
-
If using Tanita combination analyzer scales, be sure
soles of feet are clean and dry. The hands should be clean and dry
when using the Omron hand held analyzers.
-
Read carefully all instructions in manual.
-
Finally, while not as important as the factors above,
slightly more accurate readings can sometimes be obtained if clothing is not
worn. If clothing is worn, it should be dry.
We occasionally receive telephone calls from people who say they
are not getting accurate readings. This is almost always caused by not
adhering to one or more of the factors above and/or erroneous expectations as to
what their body fat actually is. Bioimpedance Bodyfat Analyzers are
sophisticated medical devices and as such they must be used properly.
